“So, You Want to Be a Sniffer Dog?”

The fun activity where you teach your dog to find a novel scent, just like at the airport and on tv!
Scent training is a great activity as it is incredibly mentally stimulating for your dog and uses their natural talent of sniffing things out. You will learn lots about your relationship with your dog and have heaps of fun along the way. And, the best part is, any dog and any person can have a go!
“So, You Want to Be a Sniffer Dog?” workshops and fun days are taught by Fiona Cowie, an accredited instructor with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers who has over 13 years experience as a professional detector dog handler.
Level 1 consists of three sessions of up to two hours each. In the first session (dogs optional) you learn all about how dogs use their noses and the do’s and don’ts of scent training. After the theory, we introduce the dogs present to their target odour and everyone goes home with all the equipment they need to practice at home. The next two sessions are practical workshops where each dog has individual runs and, by week 3, each dog will be able to distinguish a box containing the target odour from two empty ones (sometimes even more!).
Level 2 consists of two sessions of up to two hours each. In these sessions we concentrate on improving your handling skills and the dogs get to improve their skills too! In our first session we add more complexity to the searches, new smells and new heights, while ensuring you are supporting your dog with improved handling. Then in the second session, we add a spark of danger! Will you be able to handle your dog around a course of mock hazards, just like a real live operational search?
And don’t forget our Fun Days where each dog has its own go at a special “sniffing course”.
